Dissatisfied with the search body formed for the next Election Commission, BNP today alleged that the committee has been filled with those loyal to the ruling Awami League family.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the official view of the party – on the recently-formed search committee – today in a press briefing at party office.

“Filled by those loyal to Awami League family, it will be not possible for this search committee to constitute a neutral next Election Commission,” Fakhrul said during the briefing.

“It is a big letdown for the people by forming such a search committee,” he added.

President Abdul Hamid formed the search committee – people who will hunt for the potential Election Commissioners to reconstitute the election governing body ahead of the next parliament elections – after consultation with all political parties, starting with the BNP.

The process of dialogue was initiated after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia floated the proposal for talks regarding formation of the search committee.

“Our chairperson’s proposal on formation of the search committee has been ignored,” Fakhrul said, pulling reference to the charter of proposals BNP handed during their meeting with the president.

“The government wants for form another subservient Election Commission like the one led by incumbent Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad,” he added.
