The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, torched two battery-run three-wheelers in Chittagong as Jamaat is observing a daylong hartal (shutdown) in the district today.
Jamaat has enforced the strike protesting the murders of a Sitakunda leader and an activist.
Some 15 to 20 people brought out a flash procession and set afire two auto-rickshaws around 8:45am at Sholoshahar Gate No. 2, said Harunur Rashid Hazari, deputy commissioner (north) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
No one was injured in the incident, reports our district correspondent.
Though the ongoing primary terminal examinations have been kept out of the hartal purview, students are facing a lot of troubles to reach their examination halls as very few vehicles are plying the city thoroughfares.
No long-distance buses left or entered the city since the hartal began at 6:00am.
Roadside shop owners kept their businesses shut fearing vandalism.
However, train services were normal.
Jamaat activist Jashim Uddin, 27, of Shayerkhali union in Mirsarai upazila succumbed to his injuries yesterday, five hours after being beaten with sticks by unidentified miscreants in Shayerkhali’s Samiti Bazar around 10:00pm.
On the other hand, Jamaat leader, Aminul Islam, general secretary of Sitakunda’s Barabkunda union unit, was found dead with bullet wounds in the head by the road in Sitakunda’s Ponthichila on November 20 after allegedly being picked up by detectives three days ago.
