Man shot dead in polling centre attack

A man was shot dead and 50 were injured, including 10 with bullets, when the supporters of an Awami League-backed councillor candidate allegedly attacked a polling centre during municipality elections in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj this morning.

Meanwhile, a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates, loyal to AL and BNP, left over 50 people injured at another centre during the polls at Kanchan municipality around 10:30am.

Voting at the two polling centres remains suspended following the attack and clash, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Additional Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj Md Zakaria confirmed the death of Nirmal Datta, 55.

Witnesses said Nirmal was shot and died on the spot when people of AL-backed councillor candidate Mohan opened fire at Tarail Government Primary School in a bid to take control over the polling centre around 10:30am

They also blasted several crude bombs during the attack that left over 50 injured including 10 with bullets, they said.

At Hatabo Government Primary School polling centre, the supporters of chairmen candidates Rafikul Islam and Abul Bashar Badsha, loyal to AL and BNP respectively, locked into a clash, leaving 50 people injured.

Both the groups exploded several hand bombs during the clash.

Border Guard Bangladesh and police were trying to bring the situation under control at the two polling centres till 11:30am when the report was filed.
