Hossain, a candidate supported by the ruling Awami League, died in a Dhaka hospital on Tuesday, 25 days after he was injured in a clash between locals and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel during Feb 27 polls in Fakirhat Upazila.

He lost the Upazila elections to BNP backed candidate Sheikh Shariful Kamal Karim.

Hours after his death, locals blocked the Fakirhat-Dhaka-Mawa road and called a strike for Wednesday.

Awami League’s Fakirhat Upazila unit president Swapan Das claimed the strike was successful.

Vehicles did not operate within the Upazila, but traffic was normal on the Khulna-Mawa highway.

Hossain’s body reached his home at Upazila Sadar on Tuesday night. He was buried on Wednesday morning.
