Expressing deep gratitude to the prime minister for appointing him as her special envoy, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday promised that he would work devotedly for the interest of the nation and uphold the country’s image.
Ershad made the statement a day after attending a special court that will deliver judgment in sensational Maj Gen Manzoor murder case on February 10.
Ershad has been made prime accused in the case. Maj Gen Manzoor, an army general who was a war hero, was killed at Chittagong Cantonment on June 1, 1981, just two days into the assassination of the then president Ziaur Rahman.
In the statement, Ershad said, “The prime minister has given me an important task towards building a prospective Bangladesh by wiping out the past bitter experience and for this reason I express my deep gratitude to her.”
He said the image of Bangladesh has been affected badly due to political crisis of recent times which has put our manpower export, RMG, foreign investment and trust of foreign countries at stake.
As the special envoy to the premier, his first work would be to let the world know about the country’s good image, he claimed.
Saying Middle East was the largest market for Bangladesh’s manpower export which has been lost almost, the former military dictator noted that he had very good personal relations with the Middle-East countries and he wants to use that personal relation to boost bilateral relations.
He said the achievements of the recent past Awami League-led grand alliance government did not get focus in both home and abroad. On the other hand, following propagandas, foreign investors are loosing their confidence to invest in Bangladesh, said the JP Chairman adding that his one of the main task would be to bring back confidence among the foreign investors and to increase Foreign Direct Investment in the country.
The former president proposed to set up a special EPZ for Middle-East.
