The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led opposition alliance on Monday called nationwide blockade of roads, railway and waterways for an indefinite period from January 1 pressing for election under a non-party government cancelling the ‘farcical’ election slated for January 5.
Khandker Mahbub Hossain, adviser to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, announced the new programme at a hurriedly called briefing at his house at Baridhara in the evening.
The BNP-led alliance would also observe nationwide demonstration today
in protest against the government obstruction to the opposition’s ‘march for democracy’ and the oppressive measures on the opposition activists.
Khandker Mahbub, also the Supreme Court Bar Association president, announced the programme after the police had denied Khaleda Zia going out of her house and arrested the party’s vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury on the day.
On Sunday, another vice-chairman Hafizuddin Ahmed was also arrested as he was coming out of the National Press Club announcing the continuation of ‘march for democracy’ programme.
