A sub-committee of the House of Representatives of the US Congress will organise a hearing on the political situation in Bangladesh, reports
The office of House Committee on foreign affairs’ chairman Ed Royce told that the Sub Committee on Asia and the Pacific will hold the hearing on Nov 20.
It will be titled ‘Bangladesh in Turmoil: A Nation on the Brink?’ and held at the House’s Rayburn Office.
Dr Ali Riaz, a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Centre, president of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies AMN Muniruzzaman and John Stifton, Asia Advocacy Director of Human Rights Watch will participate in the hearing as witnesses.
Chairman of the Sub Committee on Asia and the Pacific, Steve Chabot will share the experience on his recent Bangladesh visit at the hearing.
During his visit to Dhaka on Nov 5, Chabot met with both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
Chabot’s visit to Bangladesh had come at a time when the country’s politics turned volatile and uncertain due to Opposition strikes, often violent, to push for a neutral caretaker which the ruling Awami League is opposed to.
The ruling Awami League wants all-party interim government which the Opposition has refused to accept.
