The government will try to bring back fugitive war criminals Chowdhury Mueen Uddin and Ashrafuzzaman Khan from abroad to execute their death sentence for war crimes, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said today.
The minister was giving his reaction to newsmen at his Secretariat office minutes after International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded the duo death penalty for their wartime offences, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
Both of them were tried in absentia.
He hoped that the execution of the judgment would be done after bringing them back with the help of the home and foreign ministries.
Neutrality and international standard was maintained during total process of the war trial, added Shafique.
So there lies no question about acceptability of the trial process, the law minister stated.
Earlier, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told The Daily Star that his party had expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
He said as the convicts are now in abroad, the government will try to bring them back through the home ministry.
Hanif was giving his party’s reaction minutes after the verdict was pronounced.
Hanif also sought help from the international community in bringing back the two Al-Badr leaders for smooth execution of the verdict.
“People’s expectations have been fulfilled by the judgment,” he said.
