National Committee threatens strike, blockade after Eid

National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports on Tuesday threatened to call general strike if the government did not refrain from implementing the coal based Rampal Thermal Power Plant project.
The national committee member secretary, Anu Muhammad, at a press conference at Communist Party of Bangladesh central office also said that the committee would go for tougher agitation programmes including laying siege and sit-in after Eid-ul-Azha pressing for its seven point demands.
He said that the proposed power plant would destroy the Sundarban, the biggest mangrove forest in the world, as the power plant was being installed near the forest.
The national committee would observe countrywide demonstrations today, Anu said, adding that centrally they would hold a rally in front of the National Press Club.
The national committee convener, Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, said that the Bangladesh government had signed an unequal deal with an Indian company by which the Indian company would be benefited much.
He called on the government to consider the opinions of the environment experts before implementing the project.
National committee leaders Siddiqur Rahman, Mohammad Enamul Haque, Shubhrangshu Chakrabarty, Saiful Haque, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Zonayed Saki, Mushrefa Mishu, Mosharraf Hossain Nannu, Ragib Ahsan Munna, Moshaed Hossain and Mahinuddin Chowdhury Liton attended the press conference.
