Jamaat, Shibir go on rampage

Activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on Monday again went berserk in several districts including Dhaka clashing with police, burning vehicles and setting off handmade bombs.
Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised and torched dozens of vehicles including police ones and beat up police when the law enforcers intercepted them while staging demonstrations as part of Jamaat-announced nationwide demonstrations.
After a two-day nationwide shutdown on September 18 and 19, Jamaat, an ally of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led opposition alliance, announced demonstrations programme for Monday demanding release of its top leaders including Abdul Quader Molla who was recently handed death penalty by Supreme Court.
At least four people
sustained bullet injury and over 50 others including about 10 cops were injured in the clashes while police rounded up dozens of suspected Jamaat-Shibir men from across the country, according to New Age correspondents.
Several hundred Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession on Mirpur Road and Elephant Road in New Market area prompting a clash with law enforcers when Jamaat-Shibir men tried to vandalise vehicles.
Witnesses said a clash between Jamaat-Shibir men and police broke out shortly after the procession began when the law enforcers intercepted the procession by firing gunshots and tear shells.
At least four Jamaat-Shibir men sustained bullet injury and 10 others including two cops were injured during the clash as Jamaat-Shibir men beat up policemen and vandalised a police van while police retaliated by firing gunshots.
Police picked up about 10 people from the spot.
New Age Rajshahi correspondent said at least 10 persons including two policemen were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and Shibir activists in Rajshahi.
Locals said Shibir men tried to bring out a procession at Ganakpara intersection in the city but police intercepted them and hurled sound grenades to disperse them.
Two police constables were injured when Shibir activists also exploded several crude bombs while leaving the spot.
