The police have yet to arrest Russell Miah who hacked to death his girl friend Saoda Begum on Thursday morning in Barisal as the police said that he had gone into hiding, leaving a ‘notes’ that held Saoda’s parents and the husband of elder sister for instigating the killing and saying that he would commit suicide.
Russell, 22, a second-year student of management of Barisal University, hacked Saoda, 18, a first-year student of accounting, in the head and other parts in the Brown Compound in the city.
The critically wounded Saoda was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital about 2:30pm where she died about 5:30pm.
The university vice-chancellor, Harunor Rashid, on Thursday said that they had a relationship but they had broken up three months ago.
Russell’s mother Renu Begum also said that they had been in love with each other and they had visited the girl’s family on July 21 with a marriage proposal.
Saoda’s mother Shahida Begum on Thursday night filed a murder case accusing Russell and two to three unnamed associates alleging that they had harassed her daughter. She, however, did not say anything about their affair of love.
The police, meanwhile, detained Bipul Baroi, a first-year accounting student of the university who is friends with Russell.
The police were yet to trace Russell till Friday afternoon, the Kotwali police officer-in-charge, Shakhawat Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, said.
The police said that Bipul had denied being involved in the incident . He said that he had lived with Russell in the same mess and all of them knew of the affair of love between Russell and Saoda.
The police seized three letters, looking like suicide notes written by Russel from his mess on Jordan Road.
In the letters written to Saoda’s parents, he called them father-in-law and mother-in-law and assumed the responsibility for killing Saoda. Russell also said that he would commit suicide to be united with Saoda in the after world.
Russell in the letter also blamed the girl’s uncle and the husband of Saoda’s elder sister of being instrumental in the breaking up of his relationship with the girl.
He said that he had decided to kill Saoda as her family, who knew full well of the affair of love, first agreed to give them in marriage but later refused to do so and assaulted him.
He said that Saoda’s parents had opposed the marriage and humiliated Russell’s family because of their poverty and lower social status.
The Barisal University syndicate at an emergency meeting on Thursday night suspended the studentship of Russell and recommended his expulsion from the university, the vice-chancellor said.
Saoda’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the DMCH morgue. The body will be handed over to the family in Barisal on Friday night.
Her namaz-e-janaza would be held at the university campus mosque. The body will later be sent to her village home at Patharghata in Barguna, sources in the university said.
Rakib and Salma, who are students of the university, said that Russell was a private tutor of Saoda and both had been in love with each other for long.
Russell’s mother, who visited the girl’s family with a wedding proposal, said that Saoda’s family had not only rejected the proposal on the day but had also assaulted Russell as they were poor and had a social status lower than that of Saoda’s family.
She said that Russell had since been mentally unstable. She said that if he had killed the girl, he could also commit suicide.
