Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders on Friday termed the 15th amendment to the constitution ‘against democracy’ and urged the government to ensure participation of BNP in the next general elections by restoring non-party caretaker government in the constitution.
BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan addressing a discussion said the present amended constitution is ‘anti-democratic’.
Jatiyatabadi Samobay Dal organized the discussion at the National Press club.
‘What is not wanted by people is not democracy. People are not for the constitution but the constitution is for the people,’ he said.
He termed ‘bogus’ the notion that a non-party caretaker government is beyond the constitution.
Addressing another function at the National Press Club opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque urged the ruling party to restore the provision of the non-party caretaker government in the constitution by bringing forth a bill in the parliament session beginning September 12.
If that happens, Farroque said, BNP and its allies will participate in the next general elections. Otherwise, he warned, elections will not be allowed to be held.
Farroque blamed the Awami League for creating a crisis by changing the
constitution and asked it to take steps to overcome the crisis.
