The Election Commission will stage by-elections to Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency on Nov 18.
“The detailed schedule of the Nov 18 voting will be available (Monday),” Election Commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz told reporters at his office on Sunday.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Awami League MP Matiur Rahman on Sep 13.
During the 2008 parliamentary polls, Matiur defeated his nearest rival BNP candidate Lutfur Rahman Khan, bagging 140,642 out of 260,477 voters. The BNP candidate got 83,073 votes.
The main opposition BNP did not contest the by-polls in the Gazipur-4 (Kapasia) constituency held on Sep 30.
Asked whether the EC would try to get the BNP to contest the Ghatail by-polls, Shahnewaz had said, “It depends on the party whether it will contest the polls. So the EC has nothing to do.”
The EC will have to hold the by-polls to the vacant seat by Dec 12. As per the rules, schedules for the by-election would have to be announced before 40 to 45 days of voting.
